Creating awareness of parental alienation in Malta

Mary Gauci, President of Happy Parenting - Malta.

Mary Gauci.

Happy Parenting - Malta (For Happier Children) has since the last 6 years been creating awareness on Parental Alienation, making protests, vigils and speaking several times in Parliament.

With our pressure, in 2020 the Malta technical committee on parental alienation was set up jointly by the Family and Justice Ministries. Our President was member on this committee. This committee commissioned research on Parental Alienation. Findings will be included in our speech.

Parental Alienation was included in the government mandatory reporting guidelines in Malta in 2020.

In 2022 in the Election Manifest a pledge was made to address Parental Alienation through a reform in the Family Court. In April 2024 the Public Consultation started.

We insist that:

  • Court notifications should be digital

  • Access and maintenance are to be decriminalized

  • An agency is to be set up to deal with family cases away from court.

  • Equally shared parenting is to be encouraged
